Dental Check-up & Cleaning

What is a dental check-up and cleaning?

A dental check-up is when we take a close look at your teeth, gums, and overall oral health to make sure everything is healthy. During the cleaning, your dentist or hygienist removes plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing can’t reach. This helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and even bad breath — keeping your smile fresh and healthy.

What’s included in a comprehensive check-up and cleaning?

Your visit at Leeming Dental is designed to be thorough and preventative. Here’s what we typically include:

  • Full-mouth examination – your dentist checks your teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints, and soft tissues to assess your overall oral health.
  • Digital or 3D X-ray scans – used to detect hidden concerns like decay between teeth, bone loss, infections, or impacted teeth.
  • High-resolution intraoral scans – detailed images that help identify early signs of wear, cracks, or changes over time.
  • Oral pathogen testing – measure harmful bacteria levels so we can tailor your treatment and prevent gum disease.
  • Professional scaling and polishing – removes hardened plaque (tartar), buildup, and surface stains for a cleaner, fresher smile.
  • Fluoride treatment & fissure sealants – for added protection against cavities, especially in deeper grooves of the teeth.
  • Personalised oral hygiene advice – guidance based on your unique results, habits, and lifestyle to keep your smile healthy between visits.

How often should I come in for a check-up and cleaning?

Most patients benefit from a professional check-up and clean every 6 months. This helps catch issues early and keeps your gums and teeth healthy.

However, if you’re prone to gum disease, have a high cavity risk, wear braces, or have ongoing dental concerns, your dentist may recommend visits every 3–4 months for closer monitoring.

How do you make teeth cleaning comfortable?

We use the AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master, a gentle, Swiss-made cleaning system that uses warm water and a fine powder jet to remove plaque, tartar, and stains.

It’s light, touch-free, and far more comfortable than traditional scraping tools. Plus, it reaches areas that are normally difficult to clean, giving you a fresher, smoother finish with minimal sensitivity.

Why do patients love AIRFLOW®?

Because it feels more like a spa treatment than a dental procedure. Unlike traditional manual scaling, AIRFLOW® is incredibly gentle while still being powerful. It effortlessly cleans around braces, implants, and hard-to-reach grooves, lifts stains from coffee or red wine, and leaves your teeth feeling unbelievably smooth and fresh.

How is AIRFLOW® different from a traditional cleaning?

Traditional scaling relies on hand instruments or ultrasonic tools, which can feel a bit scratchy or uncomfortable for some patients. AIRFLOW®, on the other hand, uses a gentle, controlled jet of warm water and fine powder to clean the tooth surface and even below the gumline. It’s kinder on the gums, more thorough, and noticeably more comfortable than conventional methods.

What is fluoride treatment?

Fluoride treatment strengthens your tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay. It’s quick, painless, and provides an extra layer of protection to keep your teeth healthy between visits.

What are fissure sealants?

Fissure sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the tiny grooves on the chewing surfaces of your molars. These grooves can trap food and bacteria, so sealing them helps prevent cavities, especially in children, teens, and adults who have deep grooves.

What is Oral Pathogen Testing?

Oral Pathogen Testing checks for harmful bacteria in your mouth that may increase your risk of:

  • Tooth decay and gum disease
  • Systemic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes
  • Pregnancy-related complications

By understanding your unique oral microbiome, we can tailor your care with personalised recommendations on oral hygiene, diet, and therapeutic mouth rinses to help keep your mouth—and your overall health—well protected.

  • ✔ Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks that can cause decay
  • ✔ Keep up with regular check-ups and professional cleanings
